6 To-dos of mobile number portability
After a long wait and numerous missed deadlines, mobile number portability (MNP) is finally here. The Sad Decline of Windows Mobile

Microsoft has been plugging away at the mobile computing market for almost as long as Windows has been around. I’m thinking of products like Windows for Pen Computing, or the original Windows CE for handheld devices. At best, you could say that the consumers were willing but the platforms were weak.

In Microsoft’s case, the problem with those early devices was a stubborn devotion to the look and feel of desktop Windows. Their vision seemed to be that the Windows GUI deserved to be moved to every device, because users understood how it worked. But of course, a desktop interface isn’t optimal for a mobile device with a tiny screen and lilliputian keyboard (if any). “Post RBI’s regulations on mobile banking issued in September last year, several banks had started working on launching their mobile banking services, and the hectic activity seen in this space in the last few days is the result of the culmination of these efforts,” says Ajay Adiseshann , managing director of PayMate, an mcommerce facilitator.

Though services such as balance check, transaction enquiry and alerts were available with most banks even earlier, this has gained momentum now, as rolling out of full-fledged m-banking facilities is in full swing. Most banks allow their customers to avail of mobile banking even if they have not registered for Internet banking services.

Alternative Mobile Browsers Tested: Skyfire vs Opera Mobile vs Fennec vs Safari vs Internet Explorer vs BlackBerry

Surfing on your phone doesn’t mean riding it over wind-swept waves — it’s actually worth getting on the mobile Web. Mobile browsers are doing a good job of bringing the Internet to life, even on the tiny screens and anemic processors of our phones.

But you don’t have to dance with the browser what brung you — you can install browsers other than the default, especially if you have a phone that runs the Symbian S60 or Windows Mobile operating systems, which are particularly app-friendly, despite their lack of decent app stores.

We took three of the main contenders for Web-browser domination and stacked them up against three popular built-in browsers for your fun and edification.
