Roku 2 Delivers Cheap, Easy Video Streaming

The last update to Roku’s line of portable streaming video players came in 2010, right as Apple was announcing the all-new Apple TV. Roku’s tiny devices were overshadowed by Apple’s even tinier (though heavier) black box. This year Roku has updated its players yet again, adding features while outdoing the Apple TV with boxes that are smaller and lighter than Apple’s $99 player.

It’s clear that the Roku 2 players—there are three models, ranging in price from $60 to $100—are inspired by the new Apple TV design. They’re slightly taller than the Apple TV, but smaller in the other two dimensions, and lighter.

New Malware Variant Jukes Apple’s Bug Fix

As promised, Apple on Tuesday released a security update to combat MacDefender, a type of fake antivirus malware that had targeted the Mac OS X platform over the last few weeks. On Wednesday, however, hackers apparently managed to figure out an end-run around its solution.

Apple’s fix updates its malware definition list daily, and it searches for and removes known variants of the MacDefender malware.

However, a new variant that the security update can’t detect was released just hours after Apple issued its fix, according to security firm Intego.

In Pics: Dell’s Tablet PC Streak in India

Tablet war has finally begun in India! World’s second-largest PC maker Dell has launched its tablet PC Streak in the country.

Streak is Dell’s bold attempt to grab a share of the tablet market which has been witnessing hyper activity from PC makers across the board ever since Apple launched its tablet device iPad. Though Apple iPad is still to make its India debut, the market is already buzzing with a host of Desi tablet devices like OlivePad and Adam tablet.

The year 2010 has seen several big smartphone launches including the Apple iPhone 4. Some other big launches of the year have been the smartphones based on Google’s mobile OS Android. Android powers many of the smartphones launched during the year. Other than Android, some big launches have also come from Nokia and Blackberry.

It didn’t take long for the iPhone 4 antenna controversy to spiral out of control. First, users began uploading YouTube videos displaying signal attenuation on their devices. Next, the tech blogs chimed in, with some pundits going so far as to suggest that Apple might need to issue a product recall. And in what arguably served as the straw that broke the camel’s back, Consumer Reports pulled their “Recommended” rating for the iPhone.

Looking to stem the ever increasing wave of iPhone 4 criticism, Apple put together a press conference on July 16 where Steve Jobs announced that Apple would be giving away free cases to all iPhone owners. Moreover, Apple, in an attempt to dispel theories that the iPhone 4 wasn’t thoroughly tested, put up a new section on its website which explains the rigorous testing Apple puts the iPhone through before it hits the market. More recently, ABC Nightline correspondent Bill Weir was offered unprecedented access to Apple’s secret wireless testing labs, an area reportedly referred to as the “black labs” by Apple employees.
