Windows Update Doesn’t Like my Linux-Windows Dual-boot System

Just when I’m thinking, “Windows sucks less than it used to,” here I am with my dual-boot system – Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit on one partition, Debian Squeeze 64-bit in LVM (with encrypted swap and home partitions) on another.

Everything has worked well until the arrival of Service Pack 1.

That’s right folks, another ten best! But this time I’ll wager you’re not familiar with any of them, or at best one or two. The free/open source software world is vast and full of excellent applications for all occasions. An interesting trend is the growth of large distributed projects such as OpenTox and AMEE. List of Companies that Pay Royalties to Microsoft for Using Android OS

According to Microsoft, Google’s Android OS is infringing on many of its patents and hence those manufacturers who use Android for their devices owe royalties to Microsoft. But the intriguing fact is that, instead of suing Google itself for infringing on its patents, Microsoft is finding it easy to sue or threaten smaller firms which don’t have the financial muscle to fight a legal battle with the Redmond troll giant.

Following is the list of companies who are already paying royalties or being sued by Microsoft for using Android.

Nokia Stuck in Limbo Waiting for Windows 7 Phones

Yesterday, Nokia released their second quarter earnings report and I use the term “earnings” loosely here because it wasn’t pretty. Oh no, it was downright ugly. The cell phone giant went from a projected 6+ billion Euro quarter down to zero, zippo, bubkus (or as Nokia put it “break even”).

Nokia appears to be stuck in Purgatory saddled with a large inventory of phones they apparently can’t sell anywhere while waiting for the next generation of Nokia phones running Windows Phone 7.

ZDNet reports that Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said in a conference call that his company was unable to compete against Android phones in China, leaving them oodles of unsold inventory. Nokia’s getting slammed by Android in Europe too. Elop must wondering why he left his comfortable position at Microsoft to take over a train wreck.

Windows 2008 Server Experiences

I am an ardent Unix admin who has been configuring and using Unix (FreeBSD) and Linux servers for the past 12 years and know them like the back of my hand.

Sometime ago, a friend of mine talked me into trying to install and configure a Win2008 server. I agreed but never had the time to try it out then.

Last week, I ordered an unmanaged Windows VPS with Win 2008 on the Xen hypervisor from Crucial Paradigm.

My idea was to configure the Web server, outgoing SMTP and FTP (the three functions I need on my simple server) using software built into Windows (i.e. without downloading/buying additional third party software).

Here is my experience with configuring the server.
