Trolling For A Quality Operating System

Normally I wouldn’t bother responding to such a blatant pile of misinformation however since this particular troll put so much effort into making his case appear legitimate I felt it is worth examining the fodder. While we have all seen these sorts of flame bated messages in the past this one initiates with what would seem to be a very earnest and friendly demeanor. However carefully examining the sender’s email address is the first clue that something is amiss.

The problem with an email such as this is that people tend to get caught up in the content especially if it begins with such a calm demeanor. Unfortunately this is all a ruse to lure unsuspecting readers into responding out of emotion regardless of whether or not their response is backed up with facts that clearly refute the trolls statements. As you can see they have created a fictitious gmail address.

Nasty Apache Denial of Service Vulnerability

A denial of service vulnerability has been found in the way the multiple overlapping ranges are handled by the Apache HTTPD server:

12 Killer Apps for Linux

This will not be the usual list of apps that every ubuntu wannabe thinks are cool after they’ve been dabbling in linux from a dualboot windows box for a couple of months. These are applications that provide me with the reasons that I’ve been using linux for the last 11 years. These are my killer apps – the reason I use linux on the desktop both at home and at work.

[Good list. I particularly agree with him on rtorrent and screen. rtorrent + screen = bliss!!! Point to note: All of these apps are not Linux-only apps, but work perfectly well on FreeBSD too:-)]

When in Doubt, Reboot? Not Unix Boxes

Last week, I wrote a little item titled “Nine traits of the veteran Unix admin.” Had I known that a few hundred thousand people would read it in just a few days, I might have put on a clean shirt or something. Regardless, I’m sorry I stopped at nine. I had at least fifteen, but it was already a long post.

I want to take a closer look at the reboot issue. It’s a hot spot for all server admins, but to Unix geeks, it’s a deeper issue — probably because Windows admins use reboots as one of their first troubleshooting steps, while it’s one of the last for the Unix team.

[Great post. My personal choice is to reboot my production servers, once a year, after I do a kernel update. Other than that UNIX needs no rebooting, except if there are hardware problems and you need to change hardware. It is worthwhile to actually fix the problem properly, instead of rebooting every time.]
